The Kansas Army National Guard 891st Engineer Battalion deployed from September 2004 until December 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was asked to produce a yearbook documenting their deployment, including portrait photos of every deploying soldier. Over the course of 15 months, soldiers and Public Affairs Officers submitted stories and photographs of their work and experiences while deployed, and family readiness groups submitted pictures of their activities stateside. The result was a 176-page full-color hardcover yearbook, a copy of which was given to every member of the battalion, at no charge, during a celebration marking their return home. To my knowledge, no other military battalion has ever produced a publication like it.
I served as Editor-in-Chief of the publication, and was responsible for all project planning, page layout and design, copy writing/editing, and some photography.
